joan_3rd_place_copy.jpgGallery 302 Miniature Show

Small is beautiful too! Every May, mollymains65-sm-150.jpgGallery 302 invites its artists to submit works in their chosen mediums for its annual Miniature Show. Conforming to strict size specifications, the pieces in the exhibit represent a wide variety of both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional art.

Any given show might include, for example, diminutive paintings, pottery or ceramics, glass and metal sculptures, basketry, wood, and jewelry. The work is juried and prizes are awarded. Molly Mains coordinates this show.

2010 Winners:

First Place: " Light in the Pines" - Janet Gill  Pastel

Second Place: "Overlook" - Molly Mains Woodcut

Third Place: "Summer Marshes" - Joan Bellucci Acrylic

Honarable Mention: "Dreamscape" - Anne Bernard Encaustic

Honarable Menion: "Sweden Road" - Nancy Engdahl  Watercolor

People's Choice - Needle-Felted Dog - Holly Best

"Miniatures are like jewels in which the Artist has invested an essence that can be held in one hand. Miniatures require close scrutiny, physical closeness, and intimate interaction. Although the works selected for recognition vary in medium and technique, each is a homage to a moment in time, or window into a private narrative made more precious by the diminutive size.  The landscapes by Janet Gill (First Place pastel: “Light in the Pines”) and Joan Bellucci (Third Place acrylic: “Summer Marshes”) are bathed in luminous light, and the silence is broken by morning’s first bird. Molly Mains’ print (Second Place woodcut: “Overlook”) honors the pattern in nature with meticulously rendered layers of subtle color.  Anne Bernard’s “Dreamscape” (Honorable Mention) draws the viewer into an internal space while the birches in Nancy Engdahl’s “Sweden Road” (Honorable Mention) appear as sentries positioned between the viewer and the space. "
